Interview with Dear Cloud

Anna of IndiefulROK recently asked me to write about Dear Cloud. As I am a very big fan of them, I was super duper excited. So, I decided to contact Dear Cloud for an interview.

They just released their 3rd album, Bright Lights, last month. It’s an album that legions of 구름들 (“clouds”, a word used for their fans) everywhere have definitely been awaiting. Nine (vocals), Yongrin (guitar), Elang (bass), Junga (keyboard), and Kwangsuk (drums) welcomed me and two friends of mine, Indri and Rain, at their base camp in Hongdae just before they had their regular practice session.

“Resilience”: Three Perspectives

“Resilience” is a documentary film about adoption, focusing on the reunion of a Korean mother and her son.

Directed by Tammy Chu, and supported by various elements in the Korean adoptee community, it was filmed over a period of four years. Our friend Widhi, my wife and I went to see a screening in Anguk last weekend. Following are our three opinions on the movie, beginning with brief profile backgrounds.

A Whiff of What’s Good: Hyang Chart

So we already have Bugs Chart to keep track of which songs people are listening to, but what about which CDs they buy? Well that’s something we can find out from Hyang Chart!

As it happens what is likely the foremost store for Korean indie music sells enough Korean indie music CDs to keep the sales chart very interesting. I’ll be posting the top 10 here whenever I notice a chart update (they’re a bit irregular, from what I’ve observed during the summer), and also include any new additions of particular interest. With getting back to more regular postings here at Indieful ROK in September and all, I figured keeping track of this chart would be a nice addition + I like how it can help me keep up with any release I may have overlooked before.

During the weekend the chart for the first week of September was posted so here you go, complete with long overdue release updates:

K-Indie News, Interviews and Reviews

Into The K League - 2010 K리그 서포터즈 연합
Thanks to Violet Sweets I came across Into the K-LEAGUE, an album released earlier this month. It gathers songs from several bands – Galaxy Express, Go! Go! Boys!, GoGo Star, Lunatic, Napoleon Dynamite, No Brain, No.1 Korean, Sugar Donut, Super Kidd, Sweet Revenge, The Strikers, Yellow Monsters, and Yellow Puffer – and all can be downloaded for free from the K-League site.

Violet Sweets offers some of the story behind this soccer inspired compilation: K-League dedicated album

잠비나이 (Jambinai) - 잠비나이

The ambient/post-rock-ish traditional Korean music trio JamBiNai (잠비나이) will release its debut EP on August 25. Although not counting more than three tracks, the self-titled release still achieves a play time over 35 minutes.

The EP’s first track, 손끝에서 손끝으로, accompanied Indieful ROK’s JamBiNai mini interview in a live recording (download here). To get a better idea of the energy offered in second track 나부락, there’s YouTube. And finally for a taste of the 17 minutes strong 나무의 대화 YouTube is helpful as well: part 1 : part 2. Visit MySpace for brief samples of the studio recorded tracks.

I’ve been listening to the EP over the last couple of days and with their truly unique sound and tasteful sense of melody it’s something I’d definitely recommend. Also I love how the blobs on the cover actually can be seen as the three members playing their instruments.

Happy Days for Sunkyeol, Dear Cloud

Happy days! Long at last, Indieful ROK favorite Sunkyeol will release an EP!

Four demo songs as written & recorded by Kyoungmo Kim (formerly of Especially When) and Joe Hollick (of Wolf People) can be found on it, including the beyond fantastic I’ll Write When I’m There that can be sampled through MySpace alongside EP track Aphex Convention. And you can trust me when I say the other two songs are just as wonderful.

The EP will be released via Electric Muse on August 10. For more on Sunkyeol, here’s Indieful ROK’s interview from last year.

In addition, in her enthusiasm for Dear Cloud, Widhi has proposed making a fan video for them, to be handed over at the August 20 release show following the band’s upcoming EP. To particiapte, check out [Wiz Project] Episode 1.

Music to Match the Weather

Much thanks to Widhi, there have been a lot of posts on female-fronted alternative pop/rock band Dear Cloud showing up in my feed reader recently.

Dear Cloud EP
For instance, earlier today Widhi shared the news that Dear Cloud have announced that they will release a new EP on August 5. 110th Club Day at Ssam

Friday is always be one of the best days. It means weekend is near! Hohoho… It was yesterday that I finally made my plans. My plan was to watch the gig that I have been waiting for quite a long time. Originally, I planned to watch two gigs at two different places one after another. The first gig was supposed to be Urban Zakapa at Mnet Pub Project in Times Square, Yeoungdeungpo and the other one is 110th The Club Day at Live Club Ssam, Hongdae.

The gig at the Mnet Pub Project is a monthly program which features different artists daily. Yesterday, it was scheduled for Urban Zakapa to perform. I went to Times Square like about 30 minutes late from the performance. Yet, when I came there, I quickly changed my mind not to watch the performance and went to Kyobo and Hottracks, with no particular reason. Well, it was not yet my time to watch them though I have been constantly listening to their ‘Sweety You’ CD just to prepare for the performance.

However, I quickly headed to Hongdae to go to Club Ssam. I have never been there before so I was worried I would get lost. So, I prepared myself with a photo of the map that I snapped just before I went out. I thought I took the wrong way but I finally managed to find Club Ssam at around 9.30 PM, which was like an hour before the long awaited Dear Cloud scheduled performance.

Club Day is an event held on the last Friday each month which usually consist of some special stages in some gig space around Hongdae. It was the 110th Club Day, yet it was my 1st Club day that I attended. The one in Club Ssam was a special Mirrorball Show which features some artists from Mirrorball music taking ‘Goodbye June’ as the title of the Show. The artists who performed in the show including 굴소년단 (Oyster Boys), 마이크로키드 (Microkid), 올드피쉬 (Old Fish), and none other than my favorite 디어 클라우드 (Dear Cloud).

Since I came earlier than the scheduled performance that I wanted to see, I came when 굴소년단 was playing their 2nd song. I have not yet get myself listened to their music before, so I did not really know any of their songs they played that night. They play quite nice with their tune and funny gags from the members, but I did not really enjoy the songs that much. Yet, you may enjoy their tune here.

Next, it was Microkid turn to rock the stage. It was also the first time for me to watch their performance. Their music is a fusion of electronic and rock with a female vocal. I think I quite like the vocalist voice and the guitar playing, yet their music has not really grown on me that much. The electronic sound was a little bit messy when I heard it the beginning, yet they managed to make it better through the end of their 30 minutes performance. It was also a little bit uncomfortable for them, I believe when there were a lot of people went in and out during the performance. It was also not a very pleasant for me either to watch to many people passed in front of me, since I sat in the middle of the room on the first line of the stair bench. One of their song that I enjoyed during the performance is this one.

More people definitely was inside the room like 5 minutes before Dear Cloud took the stage. They were definitely the one that people have been waiting to see. Since they are currently preparing for the new EP, it was definitely a very rare chance to see they perform life. I admit I did put my expectation on their performance, since I really had not got a chance to see them performing their songs in a band format. Last time in The Bridge (I should really post my review on this one too), they only performed in an acoustic format. So, I did not get to see they perform ‘Lip’, my favorite song. Yeap, they finally took the stage and people were left stunned at first. I saw Nine9, the vocalist went on to the stage with a supporter. Nine9 injured her ankle yet she managed to stand for the 1st song.

For the first performance, they play an instrumental song that I believe none of the audience had never listened before. By the time the song finished, I realized that it was a new tune from the band. They continued to play another song without a break and it was another unknown song with a soft rock tune and not an upbeat one. When I listened to it, it did not really grew on me that fast. It might not be as slow as ‘거짓말‘ yet it was not as upbeat as ‘Lip’. Moreover, I did not know what it was called. So, I am still very curious about that. Followed then by my favorite ‘Lip‘, which was beyond awesome because it was my first time watching them played ‘Lip’. I just sang along with the song during the whole performance.

After that, they played another new song. Again, nobody knows what song it was. It was my favorite new song throughout the performance. Luckily, my friend… the great Esthero recorded that song. Without further ado, here is the new song that we will probably listen from the upcoming EP, ‘무너져’ (Broken),

Dear Cloud – 무너져

They closed the performance with their song, ‘‘ (Dream). It was nice as a closing performance. The show from Dear Cloud was great and it was even better when they got a request to do an encore. For this one, they closed it nicely with ‘얼음요새’ (Ice Fortress). Yongrin, the guitarists made mistakes at the beginning even after 3 times. I thought like woow he might have forgot how to play it. Yet, it was still forgivable. They finished their performance nicely with a lot of applause from everyone.

Dear Cloud – 얼음요새

I had to miss the last performance from Old Fish. Yet, I hope to get a chance to see them next time. For now, I leave you with this one.

Old Fish – 청춘로맨스

See you at the next gig!
