And after five years? What then?
The minute someone sits down at a keyboard, sets an f-stop, or turns over a fresh page in a sketchpad and tries to describe a place, it’s already a little bit gone. Unavoidable and just fine really. It clears the way for new records, allows for comparisons (maybe even lessons or conclusions), and staves off obsolescence for at least a few magazines and papers and describers a bit longer. But when a place changes as fast as Seoul does, it can sometimes feel like a new version is needed before the old one is even finished. Read the full story

With the Lunar New Year celebrations, it seemed like a great opportunity to share what the Jan 1st New Year was like for me at Times Square and in Hongdae.

Amongst the many changes that occur in Seoul, often times a subway station can transform itself. Attached to Line 2’s Hongik University Station is a transfer route to the AREX (Airport) line. I know this because I was making my way to Exit 5, and had to go through this very clean and polished tunnel. Read the full story

When I discover places like this it only makes me miss living in Hongdae more. This cart has been open for about three months now. They park right across the from the pizza place next to Club FF (also a great late night eating spot btw). The pad thai costs 4,000 won and comes with shrimp and egg in it. You can add chicken for an extra 1,000 won. They use the flat fettuccine-like rice noodles, which I love.

Finally! Our epic journey to the dog cafe Bau House! We’ve wanted to go here for so long! In fact, if you remember our Giocat Cat Cafe video from a long time ago, then you might have wondered if there was an equivalent for dogs. This is it!
Now, we were worried about bringing Spudgy here, because Spudgy doesn’t really like other dogs. But – come on – we couldn’t go without the Spudgy!
Check out how it went in the video, and read more about the experience in the full post at EatYourKimchi.

Going on till August 22nd is an Art Festival featuring young and upcoming artists alongside those who have been around longer. This blog has become a funny thing. Originally constructed as a diary for friends and family, it has now evolved into a kind of public way to talk to myself. As thoughts get tapped via netbook into Blogspot’s familiar little editing window, wallowing in the back of my mind is the knowledge that pretty much anyone in the world can see what’s going on in my life. Then I remind myself not to be so vain.
And also that the stereotypical psychotic internet stalker is statistically unlikely to select me at random from the multitude of other blogs available to the common reader.

This was the last Mexican joint in Hongdae that I had to cross off my list. The owner and chef is a Korean woman who had lived in Mexico. The menu is quite diverse with a wide variety of Mexican dishes other than the usual tex-mex affair (mole poblano, conchita pibil) as well as some Spanish items (albondigas, paella). I was excited to try this place out because they have torta cubanas on the menu. I’ve never had one before and I’m always up to try out a new sandwich.

Yesterday SXSW announced another round of bands for the festival and this time they included Apollo 18 (must say I’m both surprised and happy to see Indieful ROK quoted). The band also aspires to do a bit of touring while out of the country - check here if you think there’s anything you could do to help out – and thus have been keeping very busy lately. In spite of all the preparations, the band’s guitarist, Hyun-seok, kindly answered a few questions for Indieful ROK:

This is a new bar that two of my buddies opened. It’s a pretty cool place and I’m not just saying that because my friends own it. It’s an r&b and soul-type place. One the owners is also a dj and they got turntables and all the equipment there. They take requests too.

- I dunno if the deal still applies, but since they just opened it’s actually an hour and a half for the first hour
So what makes this place special? I’m sure many people are aware of cocktail time at club/bar FF where you can drink unlimitedly between 11-12 on the weekend for 10,000. They got a similar deal here, except there is no set schedule. You pay 15,000 for unlimited cocktails for an hour and every additional hour is 10,000. Great for pregaming. Plus their free cocktail list is far more extensive than FF.
