K Crunch Indie: Koxx, Casker, Loro’s, and Monodiary

Let’s start by saying that we totally want to hang out with these guys. We found out about them via an MTV article about them, and we fell in love with their stuff instantly. Bought their album on iTunes, watched a bunch of their videos, and knew that we’d have to talk about them for K Crunch. This song, 12:00, is a lot different than another one of our favourite songs by them, Troublemaker, but both songs are rock your socks awesome. Side note: we sometimes go dancing at the club they’re playing at in the Troublemaker video: Club FF. Read the full story

Pick of the week: Guckkasten

It’s time to switch gears from the mainstream scene down to the indie jungle. Last time, I promised to research more about my discovery of a band named Guckkasten. The band’s name is actually German and it stands for ‘Chinese kaleidoscope.’

Turns out they’re pretty famous in Korea and have been together roughly for 11 years – first under ‘The C.O.M’ and finally sticking to the name Guckkasten. First seen as the new kids on the indie block, they’ve since earned national recognition at the 2010 Korean Music Awards for ‘Best Rock Song’ for their single ‘Mirror.’ They don’t perform to the typical ‘basement’ crowd. In addition to performing large-scale concert venues and outdoor events, they’re one of the most well-known indie acts in Korea.

But I’m still surprised at the second award they’ve received: ‘Rookie of the Year.’ Wait, what? If these guys have been together for over a decade, why did the Korean Music Awards decide to give them that? (They also shared the award with another ‘post-hardcore’ indie band Apollo 18.) Mini Interview with J Rabbit

J Rabbit (제이레빗)
I first came across the music of J Rabbit on YouTube as I was catching up on the Bugs charts in January. I was instantly charmed by the sweet songs performed by what seemed like two lovely girls but couldn’t get around to follow it up. As I learned that they had an album coming out I approached them for an interview and it didn’t take long before J Dawoon returned with answers.

Mini Interview with Yang Jungmo

Two weeks ago, on Christmas Eve, word of some guy wearing a GMC Records T-shirt on TV started spreading on Twitter. Turns out it was Yang Jungmo, the vocalist of Sweet Guerillaz, showing off some very impressive vocal skills in MBC’s new idol-making show Star Audition: 위대한 탄생. I watched his YouTube clip from the show several times, then asked GMC founder Kyono if perhaps he could help me ask Yang Jung-mo a few questions.

Could you please start by introducing yourself?

Best Korean Albums of 2010

When a year comes to an end it is not uncommon to find lists over the best albums from the year in question. I’ve compiled a few lists of my own over the years, and for 2010 my picks were posted over at London Korean LinksLKL Critics’ Choice 2010: Anna Lindgren.

아폴로 18
For the second year in a row the clear winner to me was Apollo 18’s Red.

전국비둘기연합 - EmpathySunkyeol EP옐로우 몬스터즈 (Yellow Monsters) 1집잠비나이 (Jambinai) - 잠비나이
Other releases I’d highly recommend come from National Pigeon UnitySunkyeolYellow Monsters and Jambinai and the post also includes another bunch of recommendations for titles that while great didn’t quite make it to the top 5.

As usual other people too contributed with a few choices for LKL.

Smacksoft - 3집 - Shines In The Dark (2010)Youn Sun Nah - Same Girl3호선 버터플라이 - Nine Days Or A Million
Philip Gowman, mr. LKL himself, was particularly fond of Smacksoft,Youn Sun Nah, and 3rd Line ButterflyLKL Critics’ Choice 2010: Philip

나루 (Naru) 2집 - Yet규원 1집 - 두 번의 겨울이 만든 이야기
Saharial thought that both Naru and Kyu Won had offered really good albums: LKL Critics’ Choice 2010: Saharial

이아립 (Earip) - 공기로 만든 노래시와 (Siwa) 1집 - 소요 (逍遙)아이앤아이 장단 (I And I Djangdan) 1집 - 인도 (GUIDANCE)국카스텐 (Guckkasten)- Guckkasten
And for the first year refresh_daemon of Init_Music shared his picks, landing on fairly recent albums from EaripSiwaI&I Djangdan andGuckkastenLKL Critics’ Choice 2010: refresh_daemon
3호선 버터플라이 - 전 정규앨범 리마스터링 박스세트
Much like Philip, refresh_daemon found himself enjoying the music of3rd Line Butterfly during 2010, however being more intrigued by the band’s remastered back catalogue.

Of course there have also been lists of noteworthy albums posted outside of LKL.

프렌지 (Frenzy) - Nein Songs한희정 - 잔혹한 여행옐로우 몬스터즈 (Yellow Monsters) 1집
Chris Park may have been the first out with his list for wakesidevision:My Best of 2010. Although not solely focused on Korean music it does include some FrenzyHan Hee Jeong, and Yellow Monsters.

가을방학 - 가을방학디어 클라우드 (Dear Cloud) - Take The Air안녕 바다 1집 - City Complex소히 (Sorri) 2집 - Mingle데이브레이크 (Daybreak) 2집 - Aurora

가을방학 - 가을방학
Autumn Vacation also came out on top when photographer Estherolisted his choices. His comments are all in Korean, but the full list could be worth a look anyway. As his list on the best Korean shows of 2010:
2010 Esthero Award – 올해의 앨범 (국내).
2010 Esthero Award – 올해의 공연 (국내)

More memorable concerts from the year that just passed have been listed over at the Korea Gig GuideKGG Staff 2010 Live Faves

아폴로 18캐스커 5집 - Tender
Looking for top songs rather than albums, 10Asia asked two actors with a good taste in music for their top song picks of 2010.

Turns out I share a favorite song with Sunkyungwan Scandal’s Yoo Ah In, that in addition to Apollo 18’s Warm also listed songs from Seoul Electric BandJang Phil SoonSister’s Barbershop, and The Black Skirts.
Actor Yoo A-in’s Song Picks

Tearliner’s Favorite Albums of 2010

I’m very happy that Tearliner once again agreed to list his favorite albums from the year that just passed for Indieful ROK. See, in addition to being a very talented songwriter himself, Tearliner also has an awesome taste in music with music director work for Coffee Prince and other dramas and movies behind him. I foresee that much of my own music listening will be based on the below at the very least for the next month.

Indie Music Roundup

Realizing I will never have the time to do something useful with all those Korean indie music-related posts I’ve starred in Google Reader over the last few months, here’s a selection of links from the past couple of days:

Malaysia-based entertainment site Voize has provided its audience with an introduction to The KoxxMeet the Koxx. In case you have yet to check out the electro/rock band yourself, it just so happens that they have 5 out of 6 songs from their first mini album available on MySpace.

Over at Violet Sweets, wassereis has started a new post series called “infocorner” where I’m sure there’ll be plenty of interesting things to learn on selected artists. First up is 10cm[Infocorner] 10cm.

Music to Match the Weather

Much thanks to Widhi, there have been a lot of posts on female-fronted alternative pop/rock band Dear Cloud showing up in my feed reader recently.

Dear Cloud EP
For instance, earlier today Widhi shared the news that Dear Cloud have announced that they will release a new EP on August 5. I’m sure this will make many people rejoice, seeing as both of their full-length albums are out of print. Her post contains a fair amount of videos for songs that ought to be listed on the tracklist once made official, so do check it out: [Wiz News] Dear Cloud’s EP release date, confirmed!
