Gallery Golmok Show: Homo-Sapiens

Gallery Golmok, in Itaewon has put together another compelling show. This one being their first for the 2012 year, and so got off to a start with a buzz of artists and voyeurs. This show titled, “Homo-Sapiens” is going on till February 15th. Features several artists all wrapping their talents around the theme of a species that has changed throughout time and also a touch on what it means to live in a world heavily populated (as to what I have gathered).

First a few pictures of walking down the new cafe-shopping street on my way to the gallery.

Coco Bruni

The new chain Coco Bruni takes the coffee cafe scene into the stratosphere. These folks have a definite angle. This isn’t your fuzzy slippers and rollers kind of place where you can stroll inside in your jammies, plop down, and drink yourself awake with a mug of coffee. Instead Coco Bruni offers up a stylish black and white austerity with just a smidgen of whimsy.

The look is clean, simple and throughly modern. It has a grown up appeal that makes you want you want to sit up, back straight, trying to look your best. The Coco Bruni logo, a stylized silhoutte of a girl perched atop an over sized bird adds just the right amount of kookiness to keep things from being too serious.

Blurry Heavenly Goodness

I’ve been rushing off my feet these past couple of weeks doing many things paid and unpaid that allow me to survive. The rest of my adventures in Jeju are coming, but first a short detour into deliciousness.

Dinner at the OKitchen in Itaewon is always a delight and with my father arriving in Seoul for a few days was a good excuse to pay a visit…

Your Neck of the Woods: Paul Ajosshi’s Itaewon

Itaewon, right on Namsan, claims about 22,000 people as permanent residents and is frequented not only by the US troops stationed near by, but by millions looking to enjoy it’s acclaimed night life and other less-than-reputable offerings. Because of this draw, several international restaurants have sprung up over the landscape, providing visitors with a diverse range of flavors to choose from – something that this episode’s guest was more than pleased to share.

Over the years, I’ve made it a point to avoid this little area of Seoul because of its bad reputation; however, Paul Ajosshi, as he’s known on the Internet, calls Itaewon home. “The Mecca for foreigners, the ghetto for foreigners, the den of inequity,” he tells me as we kick off our discussion of experiences and those terms all ring true in my ears. All of my previous visits to Itaewon at night have seen scores of youths lining up to drink the night away. Seeing as how Paul has lived in Itaewon and the immediate area for eleven years, he’s had ample time to explore the back streets and find the true gems of the neighborhood — which is exactly what I was hoping for.

New Cheap Eats In Itaewon

Noodle Box

New restaurants and cafes seem to be springing up all over Itaewon at the moment. As I wander down alleys and side streets I keep spotting new places to try; and right out on the main strip, sandwiched between Panchos and the KB Bank, I discovered a new take out noodle place that offers a box of South Asian goodies for far less cash than most other eateries.

Noodle Box

Noodle Box franchises have popped up in Hongdae, Shinchon, Gangnam and Itaewon, offering a small selection of noodle and rice dishes starting at 5,700 won. To celebrate the grand opening of the Itaewon branch every main course on the menu has been brought down to 5,000 won, I’m not sure how long the discount will last, but it certainly offers a thrifty alternative to Buddha’s Belly, Wang Thai or Pattaya. I opted for the Pho Xao, described as “Vietnamese Pad Thai. Fried flat rice noodles served with pork, mussel, plus vegetable combination.”

Noodle Box

Low prices also mean self service down at Noodle Box, but for 5,000 won I was happy to make the short trek to the counter. My noodles arrived promptly in their own special box (how appropriate!) and when I opened up my small cardboard parcel of delight I was greeted with a burst of fragrant steam. So far, so good. It turned out to be a tasty little package and worth the price – choice morsels of pork, a few mussels and plenty of beansprouts, but my only complaint would be that the noodles were a tad too chewy.

Noodle Box

Noodle Box offers a decent meal at very low cost and adds a touch of asian flair to the row of kebab shops that adorn the strip between the subway and the fire station. Certainly a good option for those on a budget or in a hurry, and may well offer a little nostalgia for those who used to get their noodles in boxes… To get to Noodle Box, head out of Itaewon station past KB Bank and this cheap little eatery will be on the right hand side. If you hit Mr. Kebab, you’ve gone too far. Visit their website here.

KMK: Chili King

Over the past year I’ve heard great things about Chili King. I’m glad to report back that it definitely lives up to all the hype. This burger/hot dog joint in the belly of Itaewon may be small but it packs a big punch when it comes to taste.

Right off the bat I should mention that Chili King is a bit hard to find. It’s down one of the back streets that’s a little ways off from the main drag of establishments behind the Hamilton Hotel. It’s on the same street as OK2 Kitchen and its next door to The Loving Hut and Patisserie Michot. So it’s definitely in good company.

Fermentation Celebration

A friend of mine named Jason loves beer. He showed me the place that sells the best beer I’ve ever drank, and he makes home-brews that are quite good. But you shouldn’t become his friend, because then he has more people to share his beer with, and less for me.

Anyway, a few months ago, at Craftworks Taphouse and Bistro, Jason got a bunch of his friends and connections together, who had been doing home brewing and the like, to hold a “Fermentation Celebration” – I went down with a mutual friend, and the place was so packed I couldn’t even approach the tables and displays, and talk to the brewers.

Driven by that success, Fermentation Celebration II is spread out across several locales in Gyeongnidan and Haebangchon, so that it won’t be shoulder-to-shoulder, the way the last one was.  It’s this Saturday.

KMK: Siberia

Living in such a big city like Seoul one would think international dishes would be easy to come by. For the most part that is decidedly true. For instance, its hard to go a few blocks without seeing an Italian restaurant of some kind.

Other countries however aren’t as readily represented. In particular Russian cuisine didn’t seem to have much of a foot hold. Sure there’s the “Russian Alley” near exit five of Dongdaemun station, but outside of that little corner of the city nothing much else could be easily found. That changed late last year with the opening of Siberia in the Gyeongridan area of Itaewon.
