Mini Interview with SPthe#

Yesterday I was happily surprised to find that the Indieful ROK Twitter account had gained over 1,000 followers. Follower #1000 was none other than Gwangju’s indie rock band SPthe#, and since long having yet to implement ideas for IROK about covering indie acts from outside of Seoul better, I decided this was the perfect pretext to ask for an interview. SPthe# leader and vocalist Junghee was fast to respond not only to my inquiry for an interview but also to the questions that followed:

What is the Special Project of the #?

Mini Interview with SiwaRainbow

시와무지개 (SIWARAINBOW)

Siwa is a very talented singer/songwriter. As a member of adultchild Rainbow99 has been responsible for some of my favorite music, and his electronica solo work is enjoyable as well. When first learning of their joint project, SiwaRainbow, naturally I was quite excited. Last week the duo returned with a new album, 우리 모두는 혼자, and the lovely Siwa was so kind as to answer a few questions for Indieful ROK:

Could you please start by introducing yourselves and share the story of how you came to work together?
Rainbow99 used to be a guitarist of 어른아이 [adultchild] as a regular member. Nowadays he plays guitar with Kafka, Hi, Mr. Memory, 옥상달빛 [Dalmoon] and 시와 [Siwa]. He released a self-produced album, love is no tomorrow in 2010. Also, he is the album producer of 투명 [Two Myung] and SiwaRainbow. As a producer he has many plans involving various kinds of music this year.

아키버드 (Aquibird)
A week ago Aquibird returned with a second full length album. It’s been five years since their debut and the band has undergone some changes since, leaving me even more curious to learn more about them. Finally I got the chance, as DJ Magik Cool J was kind enough to answer a few questions for Indieful ROK:
What is the story behind Aquibird?

[Wiz News] Spring… Spring… Spring…

It has been a long time since the last post that I made this year. Somehow, I personally thought that I will spend more time working than playing this year compared to the same period last year. Well, I hope that I can still manage some times not to miss this spring and its fabulous season and festival though. So, here I am writing as a reminder to myself how I should not let my spring go without coming to these music festivals.

Oh, here is my favorite spring song from my favorite, Donawhale for you to listen to before going under the cut!

Mini Interview with Paryumchiakdan

Paryumchiakdan 破廉恥樂團 파렴치악단
The other week when I first came across the music of Paryumchiakdan I heard the sound of something great. I listened to 와인의 밤 plenty of times on ReverbNation and then proceeded to ask the band’s leader and drummer Akhee Ahn for an interview. He swiftly agreed and made sure his band members answered my questions as well:

K-Indie New Releases

야광토끼 1집 - Seoulight
Exactly a week from now, on March 29, neonbunny will release her first album, Seoulight. She’s been a session musician for The Black Skirts and the album will be released through The Black Skirts’ doggyrich label. You can hear some of her sweet electro sound in the samples for Long-D and main track 조금씩 다가와줘 on Hyang Music or check out the album release show trailer to hear neonbunny with more of an electro rock sound. Personally I’m extremely excited about this release and can’t wait to hear more.

Okkyung Lee - Noisy Love Songs
Cellist and noise artist Okkyung Lee released an album called Noisy Love Songs on March 22. It was her second release under the prestigious avant-garde/experimental music label Tzadik Records where she put out her first full length album, Nihm, in 2005.

New Indie Album Releases & The Indie Music Chart for Week 10

니나노 난다 - Future Pansori 우주전에센스 - The Door To Anywhere제이워커 - 2nd
Here are some interesting releases I didn’t get around writing about sooner (although the post should’ve gone live during the weekend…):

On February 17 Ninano Nanda released a debut album titled,  Future Pansori 우주전. After providing the “Corean voice” to I&I Djangdan’s dub & reggae blend Jang-Goon is now getting deeper into electronica. The official site offers a biography in English for those that wish to learn more about  traditional Pansori and that Ninano Nanda aspires to make. Check out the album promo vid here.

From the producers behind The Moonshiners, the new rock’n'roll trio The Essence released an EP called the Door to Anywhere online on February 23 and on CD March 8. Their 60s-70s inspired sound blends garage, punk, blues and psych rock.

The alternative rock trio The Jaywalker originally formed in the 90s and re-united again a few years ago. Their first full length album after the reunion, Illusion, came out in 2010 and on March 10th their follow up album titled, 2nd was released. Here is the music video for album main track 말해.

이태훈 - 기대Indie rock guy Lee Tae Hoon debuted with an album called 감성 in 2010. On March 10 he released his second album, or album 0.2, called 기대. I haven’t managed to figure out what his music sounds like, but Lee Tae Hoon seems like a humble guy thanking the people that find his music in the album info.

나윤성 - 2nd EPSinger/songwriter Na Yoon Seong released his second EP, 2nd EP, on March 5. It follows last year’s EP debutRomantea and which has a pop/rock sound.

Mini Interview with Idiotape

So a little while ago I realized that while I’ve been eagerly posting updates on Apollo 18 and their impending US tour I had spent much less effort covering the whereabouts of the bands participating in the Seoulsonic North American. I also realized that I haven’t kept up with Idiotape at all since first discovering them in 2009. In an attempt to remedy that I sent off a set of questions to Dguru that returned with answers just before the band departed on their journey:
