In early December, the folks at the Global Village sponsored a European Christmas Market. Since it was an out-of-the-ordinary event that probably wouldn’t happen again anytime too soon, I joined my friends on Saturday morning to take in the event. I didn’t really know what to expect. I jumped in a taxi and headed over to the Hyehwa area.
The market took place outside Hansung Dae Station on the light blue line over a tiny river walkway and an old fountain. I arrived early, but there were already folks out and about the stalls. To warm myself up, I headed for the hot chocolate. I was expecting a steaming cup of authentic chocoate goodness, but instead got something that seemed to come out of a packet. Definitely bad. I also bought a package of caramel cookies you eat with coffee. Definitely good. There were other cookies, crackers, cheese, and cakes to be had but the prices seemed way out of proportion to the serving size. These folks were capitalizing on the little European market, but not outrageous enough to actually send me scurrying away.
Nope, instead I opened my wallet and headed over to the stand selling a potato dish with Racalette cheese. Delicious. There was also a stall selling homemade sausage sandwiches, which were also a must-eat, though a fuss to pay for. If you had cut the prices in half for the dishes on sale, then it would have felt right. Still, it was very good, especially with the spiced wine.
There were also Christmas cards, ornaments, and trinkets on sale as well as an assortment of cheeses. All in all, it was a good diversion. Next time, though, it could be improved with a lot more stalls, a bigger area, better pricing or a bigger serving size.
